Kaikoura

We spent a day in Kaikoura and managed to miss eating the local delicacy, crayfish, which we gather is more lobster-sized than the UK's tiny freshwater variety.  We also missed the whale watch, but the weather wasn't great and time was short and we had done something similar in Cape Ann, Mass a few years back.
The overcast weather and a bit of rain made the coast seem a little bleak.

Some local inhabitants took it in their stride to the point of stoicism.
Whereas others seemed a little cantankerous.
We were told this was a seal colony but having seen them in San Francisco and the Galapagos they seemed more like sealions, one of the major points of difference being the ear flap.
