From Nelson we headed across country for not so much an early start as a late breakfast, which we had at the Broadway Cafe in Murchison. Good food and good coffee. It knocks roadside catering in the UK into a cocked hat.
From Murchison it was either the quick route via Reefton or the longer via Westport and down the coast. We took the latter and were glad otherwise we would have missed the rocks at Punkaiki (Pancake Rocks). The outlook over the bay was beautiful even if the light was unflattering. However the blowholes and the waves crashing through were worth seeing.
One even produced a rainbow.
